The influence of the labor market on flexible mobility
There's a clear shift in the Belgian labor market regarding contract durations. Social secretariats are seeing a significant increase in freelance and self-employed workers. Over a five-year period, the number of freelancers has increased by 32%. They're also seeing more temporary contracts, interims, and flexi-jobs than five years ago.
These figures are particularly significant for younger employees: Between the ages of 18 and 34, 1 in 7 has a temporary contract, with peaks in the major cities. There is also a decline in the overall seniority of permanent employees. The number of employees changing jobs annually continues to rise, meaning greater uncertainty for employers regarding long-term employment relationships.
In terms of mobility, this means that companies prefer to incur operational costs rather than enter into long-term lease obligations. Furthermore, the mandatory introduction of the mobility budget in Belgium will lead to an increase in shared mobility among employees who would previously have received a traditional company car.
Consumers and businesses alike want to be able to cancel their leases on a month-to-month basis. For landlords, this means flexible contracts, smooth management, and real-time availability.
